Catalase Assay Kit - Information

Assay Genie's improved catalase assay directly measures catalase degradation of H2O2 using a redox dye. The change in color intensity at 570nm or fluorescence intensity (Ex/Em = 530/585nm) is directly proportional to the catalase activity in the sample.

Applications

For quantitative determination of catalase activity and evaluation of drug effects on catalase activity.

Catalase Assay Kit - Key Features

  • Sensitive and accurate. Use 10 sample. Linear detection range 0.2 to 5 U/L catalase activity.
  • Simple and Convenient. The procedure involves adding a Substrate to sample, incubation for 30 min, followed by a Detection Reagent and reading the optical density or fluorescence intensity.

More Details

CATALASE (EC 1.11.1.6), is a ubiquitous antioxidant enzyme that catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to water and oxygen. By preventing excessive H2O2 build up, catalase allows important cellular processes which produce H2O2 as a byproduct to occur safely. Deficiency in catalase activity has been associated with grey hair and peroxisomal disorder acatalasia. Simple, direct and high-throughput assays for catalase activity find wide applications.

Entrez Gene Summary for CAT Gene

This gene encodes catalase, a key antioxidant enzyme in the bodies defense against oxidative stress. Catalase is a heme enzyme that is present in the peroxisome of nearly all aerobic cells. Catalase converts the reactive oxygen species hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen and thereby mitigates the toxic effects of hydrogen peroxide. Oxidative stress is hypothesized to play a role in the development of many chronic or late-onset diseases such as diabetes, asthma, Alzheimer's disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancers. Polymorphisms in this gene have been associated with decreases in catalase activity but, to date, acatalasemia is the only disease known to be caused by this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2009]

UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot for CAT Gene CATA_HUMAN,P04040

Occurs in almost all aerobically respiring organisms and serves to protect cells from the toxic effects of hydrogen peroxide. Promotes growth of cells including T-cells, B-cells, myeloid leukemia cells, melanoma cells, mastocytoma cells and normal and transformed fibroblast cells.
